ROCHESTER, NY (July 13, 2020) – Today, the Department of Energy (DOE) released its Topics for the FY2021 Phase I Release Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. DOE is unique in releasing its topics before the FOA is released. Now is the time when potential applicants should take advantage of the opportunity to study the topics and generate questions that they can raise next week at the Topic Webinars being held by DOE. Webinar 1 topics: 1-27, July 21st and Webinar 2 topics 29-38, July 22nd.
If you have never applied for an SBIR/STTR award from the Department of Energy before, then we also encourage you to take advantage of the DOE SBIR/STTR Phase 0 Assistance program. The services are free of charge to eligible small businesses with strengths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The new DOE Phase 0 Assistance website, also launched today, provides an overview of the eligibility criteria and the services eligible companies will receive from the program.
To date more than 700 small businesses have participated in the Phase 0 program since it began in 2014. Follow-up data demonstrate a higher Phase I award rate for companies that have participated in this program. The goal of the Phase 0 program is to help new applicants compete on merit and win at the same rate as companies who have been winning awards from the DOE SBIR/STTR programs for many years.
“We are excited to begin working with our eleventh group and look forward to assisting eligible companies to develop competitive proposals,” said Project Director Chris Kaufman. “This program is open to all first-time applicants. The DOE has a particular interest in providing support to U.S. women-owned, and socially and economically disadvantaged small businesses located anywhere in the U.S. and its territories that work with advanced technologies, as well as to any U.S. small, advanced technology firms currently located in the following under represented states, districts, and territories: AK, AR, DC, GA, HI, IA, IN, KS, LA, ME, MN, MS, MO, NC, NE, ND, NY, OK, PA, PR, RI, SC, TN, WV, WI.
